He missed training today (February 22nd) and will now sit out a game that the Red Devils go into having already amassed a 2-0 aggregate lead from the first leg in Amsterdam.
Sir Alex Ferguson hopes his star striker will be fit in time to play Norwich in the champion's Premier League encounter this weekend.
"He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday," said the Scot.
Rooney's misfortune may play to the advantage of young Frenchman Paul Pogba. The midfielder has impressive in youth team and reserves matches over the past few seasons and may be given a run out on Thursday night.
Sir Alex explained that he selection for the game will be problematic as he tries to shuffle his pack to give players who are returning from injury a some competitive action.
If the boss fields a inexperienced side then Ajax fans may fancy a football bet on them recording an upset.
