British hopes prepared for French Open

British hopes prepared for French Open

Andy Murray may be the only realistic hope of any British success at this month's French Open, but other domestic players are making impressive progress during qualifying for the grand slam.

Jamie Barker triumphed over Germany's Peter Torebko 6-4, 7-6 and now only needs to win three other matches if he is to join Murray in the main draw for the sport's biggest clay court competition.

The British number three and world number 206 will now face Spaniard Daniel Munoz-De La Nava in the second preliminary round.

Despite being the best British hope, Murray has enjoyed an indifferent few months on the sport's slowest surface.

He has yet to make it to a final at a clay court Masters event and crashed out to France's Richard Gasquet in his most recent outing in Rome.

Unlike Barker, Murray will have a few days off to perfect his game before the start of the Roland Garros event this Sunday (May 27th).

Robin Soderling set to miss the summer

Robin Soderling has said that he will miss most of the tennis tournaments this summer, as he fights to get fit again after suffering from glandular fever.

The Swede last played in July 2011, which means he will miss at least a year of competitive action by the time he returns.

Soderling has twice made it to the final of the http://www.youwin.com/en/sports-betting/tennis-odds, but has now accepted that his illness will stop him from participating this year.

He also believes he will have missed the Olympics in London.

The former world number four said: "The Olympic Games are always special. It's not that it's difficult to miss a particular event, but that I really want to play.

"I really want to return, I'm not 28 years old yet and I hope to still have many years [to play]."

His absence will mean that the French Open and Wimbledon finals are once again likely to be contested by two of Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Djokovic needs to win in Paris to complete a career gland slam.
